Observe, critically and thoughtfully and pay attention to your thinking and reactions.
LET'S DISCUSS.
Photo Find #1Your Job: Please find 6 images that you find visually interesting. Try to find images that capture your style, have a certain look or feel to them that you gravitate toward, or just have a specific content that you really enjoy. For each image, Please write a few sentences about the photograph. Why do you like it? What catches your eye? What about THIS photo do you find particularly interesting? |
First UploadIn Google classroom within the Photo Finds box, I want you to upload the 6 images you researched previously. For this assignment and most photo finds it is generally easiest to insert them into a Google Presentation. THIS IS NOT HOW YOU WILL TURN IN THE PHOTOS YOU TAKE FOR YOUR ASSIGNMENTS. Additionally, along with your chosen images, please write your reflective answers as to why those images spoke to you directly. What was the captivating factor that led you to those specific images? Why do you like what you like? |
The difference between a photograph and a snapshot
In your responses tab, please define what YOU BELIEVE to be the difference between the two. This is your opinion. You may agree with, and build upon, what we discussed in class, or you may have a completely separate opinion. What is a SNAPSHOT, what is a PHOTOGRAPH...can the two cross over? This discussion is relevant to the entire body of your work this quarter. What we are seeking to achieve in or time together is a collection of PHOTOGRAPHS. What are the elements necessary to apply to your work, your work ethic and your work habits to ensure you are practicing the art of photography? Keep yourself in check....push yourself....push your skill....and make what you find amazing in your world visible. |
Response Prompt: How does Photography affect YOUR world?Truly...think about this..... How many times do you see a photograph cross your path daily? What role does photography play in your world? Is photography part of the "world" you look at? Does it touch your school day, work day, play day, or is it throughout the entertainment you seek? Is there some that you notice more than others? Why? Perhaps you are noticing photographs more....Why? How does photography affect how your perceive information if it does at all? Why did you take this class? What was the resulting goal in mind when you signed up? What goal do you have for improvement from the beginning of this class to the end of this class? How will you know? What is your plan for success? _http://youtu.be/xoq-_jj1x6Q Power of a Photograph, Napalm girl (first 8 Minutes) |

PRE ASSIGNMENT REVIEW |
Please look at the photos below. What do you notice about them? What is different, unique or special about the differences found in gallery 2? Imagine yourself as the photographer of gallery 2, what would you have to be doing to take these shots? What is different about what you would be doing here compared to what you did on the first assignment? IF you can find the differences, then you are ready to begin shooting for assignment #2.
gallery 1: shots much like we talked about for assignment #1
GALLERY 2: shots more appropriate for assignment 2
ASSIGNMENT # 2 POINT OF VIEW
YOUR JOB: 12 frames that approach a subject from an interesting point of view
In 12 frames it is now your job to define POINT OF VIEW, specifically…YOUR point of view…and illustrate your definition with solid photographic technique. You have worked with composition. This is a solid framework that cannot be ignored as we continue on. Now, with those tools handy…let’s get CREATIVE!!!
Oh the directions you could go with this!
What does point of view mean to you? Is it the angle from which you capture your shot? Is it your take on a certain topic, issue, event? Is it looking at a situation from another angle other than your own? Is it something that should be done in the first person, or is it something best told from an alternative characters point of view? Is it a little bit of all or none of the above?
You have 12 frames and 1 week to capture POINT OF VIEW.
Go out into the wold with a plan, and with your camera. Are you going to stay technical and simply consider camera angles? Great!
Consider the tips on this website:
http://www.digital-photography-school.com/7-tips-for-great-low-angle-shots
http://www.digital-photography-school.com/forced-perspective
http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/archived-assignments/120466-assignment-dutch-angle-shot-june-2-16-a.html
Are you anxious to get more creative and expressive? If so, use this opportunity to break out and push the definition of POINT OF VIEW! Think serious topics or create a fictional story…just stay solid and consistent with technique!
RESPONSE IMAGE
In a thoughtful response, write as much as you can about this image.

ASSIGNMENT #3 :LIGHT, SHADOW, REFLECTION
YOUR JOB: 12 photos that clearly represent the aspect of lighting, light considerations, shadows and/or reflections.
Remember, it may still be a good photograph yet not be a strong representation of lighting. If you look at the world and it is the light that captures you....THAT is the moment you are seeking!

KEY POINTS OF CONSIDERATION:
- direction (frontlighting, sidelighting, backlighting)
- contrast
- color
CONTRAST AND COLOR CAN BE ENHANCED WHEN YOU SHIFT YOUR ISO
- low lighting needs a higher ISO (1000)
- brighter lighting will shoot better at a lower ISO (100-200)
ALSO, CONSIDER YOUR WHITE BALANCE SETTING
- If your photos seem washed out, check to see if your camera is set to AWB. If it is, shift it to the sun icon that indicates you are reading the natural day light. This will bring back the colors I imagine you were trying to capture!
RESPONSE IMAGE(S)
Lets bring a new twist to this response image. This time, not only do I want your thoughts...I want your action as well!
To perform this action, you will need to right click on one of the images below and choose the option of "save image as"
Save the image to a location where you normally save your own photos, as you will need to access it in order to edit.
Questions:
How can you take a mediocre photo and make it better?
What would you do with this photo specifically? Show me...in words and in editing action?
If your answer involves something that has to do with the taking of the photo, please describe it in words.
(Post your edited photo on your responses page.....this is a competition......best edit will earn a prize..judged by a neutral party)

Candid or Informal Portraits: What are they? What are some tips and tricks? Find and example that you think is amazing and post it to your photo finds.

PART TWO:
Find one famous portrait photographer that you like. Who did you choose?_____________________
Why did you choose them?______________________________________________________
NOW..copy/save one of their portraits that you truly admire or wish you had taken and post it to your weebly. Next to it, copy/save a portrait from someone else (one you do not particularly like). Place them side by side on your photo finds page. Compare and contrast these images and justify why your chosen photographer's portrait is better and more successful. What did they do to make their image outstanding? What editing choices did they make? What technical choices did they make? What do you now know about photography that makes you respect this photograph? What is the other photo missing? What qualities make this photograph sub-par for you?
This should be a solid analysis of two photographs backed with solid thinking and justification. READ each photograph and make your thinking visible!
EXAMPLE
The images above each represent the concept of portraiture that walk the definitive line between formal and informal. They each have the intent of depicting an image/sense of the person photographed and they do so through similar edits and tools. Both are black and white photos and both images fill their respective frames with information. In so doing, each photograph utilizes the compositional concept of simplicity which I very much appreciate. However, the photograph on the left, in my opinion, has a greater sense of interest, intrigue and richness. Even without a face, the story behind this photojournalistic image runs circles around the information given in the photograph on the right. On the left (photograph by James Nachtwey) there is a richness to the blacks that pull me in, and a clarity to the light which defines details in a way that keeps me searching for visual information. The photograph on the right, by contrast, seems washed out and too ordinary to capture my attention for more than a few seconds. I appreciate the stark balance of Nachtwey's photograph and his willingness to break the rule of mergers. He paints a picture of a man, of a life, of a circumstance and of emotion with only elements of a person.
ASSIGNMENT 4: PORTRAITS
BASED OFF OF THE INFORMATION AND RESEARCH YOU HAVE COMPLETED, IT IS NOW YOUR TURN TO PICK A STYLE AND SHOOT WITHIN IT!
YOUR JOB :
18 PORTRAITS (6 portraits with 2 edits, post the original and the separate edits)
STYLE OF YOUR CHOICE..
CLEARLY LABELED
FULLY EDITED
COMPOSITION , LIGHTING, EDITING AND OVERALL PRESENTATION OF CHARACTER MUST BE EVIDENCED.
DUE ONE WEEK FROM TODAY!!!!!
SOME MOTIVATION
“When I view a portrait, I want it to communicate something of the nature of the person, not just look like someone.”
“it is an image that invites your imagination to reach beyond the obvious.”
The great portraitist is one who sees things others don’t. This can obviously be said of any artist, visual or otherwise, but the portrait artist has to appraise and apprise in a manner of seconds, plotting a visual course that will reveal what he or she has seen and wants to reveal. A great portrait photographer sees a great many aspects of a person in a split-second. It is perhaps the greatest gift a photographer can possess and it is rare.

SOME ANSWERS TO THE PHOTOQUEST
ENVIRONMENTAL
‘on location’ or ‘environmental’ portraits are portraits taken of people in a situation that they live in (work, rest or play) and/or a place that says something about who they are.
These shots sit somewhere between the purposely posed shots of a studio portrait (they are posed and they are unmistakably ‘portraits’) and candid shots which capture people almost incidentally as they go through their daily life.
What environmental portraits do:
They give context to the subject you’re photographing
They give points of interest to shots (something you need to watch as you don’t want to distract from your subject too much)
They help your subject relax
They often give the viewer of your shots real insight into the personality and lifestyle of your subject
Tips
Spend time getting to know your subject
Choosing a Location that:
says something about your subject
adds interest to the shot
doesn’t dominate the shot

Tips
Be friendly, use your charm
Introduce yourself and explain what you are doing
Stay positive, keep your confidence levels up, keep looking for potential subjects
It gets easier the more you try it
FORMAL
http://www.digital-photography-school.com/portrait-photography-tips
a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer.
CANDID OR INFORMAL
http://www.digital-photography-school.com/11-tips-for-better-candid-photography
The opposite of formal!!!!

ASSIGNMENT #5: THE WORLD IS AMAZING, THIS IS WHY
YOUR JOB:
Please capture 12 photos that demonstrate the moments in life that stop and make you look, wonder and think how beautiful life can be. What gets your attention? What fascinates you? Do you ever stop to wonder if people see the world the way you do? Here is your chance to make that happen!
This assignment SHOULD be the most exciting to date as it is a true opportunity to show off your wild side, get creative, push your thinking, expand your learning, and show off your world - whether your world is full of life, hate, hunger, passion, intensity or boredom. Photography does not discriminate. Photography is YOUR truth.
This is great because no two people will have the same outcome. Find beauty in your everyday...and apply all of your photo skill with each moment captured. (composition, POV, lighting, editing)

ASSIGNMENT#6 THEMATIC SHOOT
YOUR JOB:
12 PHOTOS THAT REPRESENT THE THEME OF YOUR CHOICE, EDITED AND POSTED WITH A REFLECTION
THEMES:
"You can't tell any kind of a story without having some kind of a theme, something to say between the lines."
SOOOOO, What are themes anyway?
A photo theme simply means creating a set of photographs that are related in some way, whether it be through subject, color or another recurring pattern. The beauty of doing this is that you are not required to constantly come up with a new subject or idea for each consecutive photo; once a theme’s subject has been established, you only need to find new instances of that subject. This forces you to think along one idea path and allows you to forget about the subject altogether and concentrate on what’s really important…taking an interesting and thought-provoking photo.
IMPORTANT QUESTIONS YOUR PHOTOS MUST ANSWER:
What are the key ideas or details? What is the central message?

ASSIGNMENT#7: CREATIVE USE OF GEOMETRY, REPETITION & P.O.V
YOUR JOB:
You will take 6 photographs that utilize the concepts of geometry and repetition. As you take these images, you MUST consider your POINT OF VIEW! Shoot the images in color. Edit them in color. Make copies of each of your edited color images and then edit ALL 6 of them in BLACK AND WHITE. Post each set together to make a total of 12 images posted.
WHY REPETITION?
Repetition is one of the most important concepts used in every visual art. When you repeat a certain size, shape or color you add strength and additional meaning to the overall image. Also, if you repeat a certain element many times it becomes more puzzling.
Life is filled with patterns – many of which we overlook due to the business of our days – however once you get an eye for spotting them (and it takes being intentional and some practice) you’ll be amazed by what you see and you’ll wonder why you didn’t incorporate them into your photography before

A WEEK IN THE LIFE
Much like identity, but less staged...less managed..more natural and literally in the moment. If you choose this version of assignment 9, you will be shooting more from a photojournalistic approach. For this assignment you are the storyteller of YOUR story, YOUR world, YOUR life Imagine this assignment as one in which you will exchange a notebook for a camera. Imagine this assignment as one where you wander about your world, and return with detailed descriptions in the form of photographs instead of writing. All of those times where you wondered to yourself."if you'd only had your camera"...will be erased. And when I say "detailed," I mean that I not only want you to record details of the scene in front of you, I want to know why you think the scene is worth the expenditure of a single frame of film, or even of a single pixel. I want to know whyyou think this particular scene, object, or person is worth the effort required to push the shutter release; what makes this a photograph worth making? If nothing else, you should come away from this exercise having learned that you should never leave the house without some sort of camera over your shoulder, or in your pocket. Another way to think about it...Assume for a moment that you are going to be leaving earth on a spaceship, never to return. There will not be any form of entertainment or decoration on the ship. You will not have any mirrors, films, works of art, etc. You will be eating processed food and drinking ...who knows what. You will be locked down with only 12 photos to document your life and entertain you. In the next week, without consulting any of your classmates, make 12 photographic images that will sustain you on your voyage. It does not have to be insanely profound, but we are looking for personally meaningful images. Do you want pictures of your dog? Your mother? Or the food that is your every breakfast. It's up to you. YOUR JOB In a minimum of 12 images capture: What is essential to your everyday? What defines your experience in this world? Who makes up the complexion of your days? If people did not know you, or if you needed to get someone to understand your situation, what would you need to show them? Do not forget quality images, but layer your technique with quality content. You can present in a series of collages or as an album. Think, please, about how you pair the images, arrange the order, etc. |

Erik Johansson...IF YOU LIKED DOUBLE EXPOSURE!!!!!
JUST A NEAT EXTRA...
What are your thoughts to what he does? Is it better than photography, still photography, or not photography at all?
How does he use elements of photography? What does he have to know?

PHOTO CHALLENGE: Photo with text
Thinking about yourself and all that you have to say, all that is relevant to you.....Take a photo that incorporates TEXT. What will you say and how will you say it?...these are two questions you MUST consider. Go about this in any way that appropriately works for you, simply have a plan.
PIXLRX will have some great editing (and text inserting) options for this...please check it out
Amazing photographs do not just happen. Sometimes the best planning can assist you on your road to visual success. Photographs can be tricky....Photographs can be frustrating....A little planning, especially when working with people and portraits...can save you some trouble!
Try it! If only for one photographic moment..try sketching out and writing out your idea for a truly great message (lighting, editing, composition, focus, expression etc)

FINAL PORTFOLIO
Show your stuff!
It is your job to create the best of YOUR best album.
What I am looking for is 20 images that evidence the quality of both your photography and your editing.
You should pull these photos as a sampling of all of the work you have done this semester, NO need to take more photos.
If you feel you do not have 20 quality images, then, please feel free to do any additional shooting to prove your skill.
In your google drive, to make it easy, I suggest creating a folder entitled FINAL PORTFOLIO, where you will then copy and move your 20 images.
(4 points possible per image =80 Points)
FINAL PORTFOLIO REFLECTION
Please post this below your album
*How do you feel you have grown in skill throughout this quarter?
Think about what it was like taking pictures at the beginning and compare that to how you shoot now. Has anything changed? If so, what? If not, why not?
*Do you notice yourself leaning towards a certain point of view? A certain editing style? A certain subject matter? Explain, and explain how your photos demonstrate this.
*Explain why you chose these particular photos. Why do you feel they are your best work? What is it about these images that make them worthy of the title "THE BEST OF THE BEST"? Perhaps it would help to talk about some individually as well as the whole group. Compare and contrast your best from your good.
*Is there any project that stands out for you, as either your favorite or your least favorite? Why? Are there any images in your album from these lessons?
*If you had the quarter to do all over again, what would you do differently? (Consider this advice to the next class)
(10 points possible...use your vocabulary...use your personal thinking and experience....use PHOTOGRAPHY talk)
THE CRITICAL 10
On 10 of your final 20 images, you must breakdown your image to its specific artistic and technical structures.
On 10 of your photos you must put a caption that identifies this information. You might not know the specifics exactly, but you should be able to get close. What are the indicators that tell the technical story?
For ease....you can copy and paste this into your captions:

ASSIGNMENT : IDENTITY THROUGH SELFIES
YOUR JOB: 6 photos that REINVENT the Selfie (AKA a Self-portrait)
LEARNING TARGETS:
- How can self-portraits help you think about/explore your own identity?
- Is there a difference between a selfie and a self-portrait?
- How can you use photographic tools and techniques for self-portraits/selfies?
- Essential Question: Why do artists create?
Or is our uniqueness also our beauty?
What if we learned to take selfies that emphasized our creativity, our uniqueness and also our beauty?
SELFIES. We are all guilty of this little pleasure. Some of us more than others. As photographers, we have a little power to change the pathetic selfie photo into something more creative, effective and powerful.
Now is the time to put an end to the horrible selfies. What will you say?
Your job: Take 6 self-portraits using the I AM poem as a prompt for creative ideas. Each shot should be saying something about who you are.
Think about how you can use these techniques to show off who you REALLY are, not just what you look like from a selfie point of view.
Ideas for shots:
1) Utilize a mirror
2) Utilize a fun point of view and the timer function
3) Utilize props
4) Utilize written word or drawn images
5) Utilize a material to disguise part of your face
6) Utilize electronics for a multiple portrait
7) Utilize a double exposure technique in PS/pixlr
8) Utilize shutter speed work
9) What else can you think of??????

Assignment #: LANGUAGE ART/OPPOSITES
How do artist get their ideas...? Could simply a Word inspire them?
You are that artist today! You have TWO jobs. FIRST, your mission for this assignment is to choose your FAVORITE word. I expect you to digest, discover, meditate upon your word. Where does it come from? What does it mean? Are there multiple meanings for your word!?
SECOND, what is your word's POLAR OPPOSITE?? Choose a word that contrasts the first word.
Now, VISUALLY INTERPRET your word and its polar opposite or antonym. Consider the lighting, point of view, and composition to capture the essence of your words!! Be creative and run from the cliches. For example, If you choose the word happy, PLEASE do not shoot a portrait of someone looking right at you smiling! How can you capture the meaning of your word as you see, feel, and/or express it??
Finally, take 6 shots of the first word and 6 shots of its contrasting word. That equals 12 SHOTS. When you upload your pictures. You should organize them in that there are 6 rows with two columns. One column has your favorite word. The second column has its contrasting word.

Assignment #: ILLUSTRATE A SONG
Science all but confirms that humans are hard-wired to respond to music, and that music stimulates more parts of the brain than any other human function. Music has power. The initial and most obvious power of music is the ability to evoke emotions as we often associate music with memories. Some will try to find the peace in music. Some like dancing with rhythmic music. Some people even consider it as a way of showing the amorphous collection of suppressed emotions, feelings, past-experiences, and other emotional clutter or wreckage.
People find that music can open a kind of inner space in which certain experience can happen.
Different kinds of music may lead listeners to experience a mental and emotional excursion or trip that seem quite real to them. Its like a dream, but closer.
ASK YOURSELF: How does music play a role in your life? When you are happy, do you listen to a certain kind of song? How about when you are sad, mad, excited, in need of energy? Do you have songs that you consistently rely upon? IF so, WHEN.....WHY?
YOUR JOB:
AT MINIMUM, choose one song and take 5 AMAZING photos that match the lyrics or the meaning from the song. These are not cliche, randomly taken photos! These are thoughtful representations of song, words, music, that have relevance to YOU!
Research conceptual photography.
Listen to your song and let your brain wander....where does it take you? What do you see? What do you remember? How can you go there with your camera to capture it?
When the day is long and the night, the night is yours alone,
When you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on.
Don't let yourself go, everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes.
Sometimes everything is wrong. Now it's time to sing along.
When your day is night alone, (hold on, hold on)
If you feel like letting go, (hold on)
When you think you've had too much of this life, well hang on.
Everybody hurts. Take comfort in your friends.
Everybody hurts. Don't throw your hand. Oh, no. Don't throw your hand.
If you feel like you're alone, no, no, no, you are not alone
If you're on your own in this life, the days and nights are long,
When you think you've had too much of this life to hang on.
Well, everybody hurts sometimes,
Everybody cries. And everybody hurts sometimes.
And everybody hurts sometimes. So, hold on, hold on.
Hold on, hold on. Hold on, hold on. Hold on, hold on.
(Everybody hurts. You are not alone.)

In the SPIRIT of keeping up with our creative techniques, yet adding to our portraiture assignment, today we will experiment with ghost photography. Closely examine the photos below. You should be able to deduce what the photographer did to create the image. Fast or slow shutter speed? Bright or dim light? High or low ISO? Hand held or stabilized camera?
Look at composition as well. Just because they are getting very technical with their camera does not mean they forget the basics of composition, viewpoint or lighting.
